Although the GOP lost a seat in the special election, it
still holds a comfortable 36 to 23 majority in the Senate, while the Democrats
retain their 95 to 49 seat edge in the Assembly. All of these seats are up for
re-election in November. Legislative
districts will be redrawn before the November election to reflect the 2000
census figures.
Lawmakers are expected to unveil a redistricting plan
Thursday. The Albany Times Union reports that Senate Republicans plan to add a
62nd seat in Brooklyn. By contrast, the Assembly must hold to 150
seats, but will redraw political boundaries to add seats in New York City, and
subtract three upstate, most likely in western and central New York.
On the Federal level, Representatives Louise Slaughter, Maurice Hinchey and Gary Ackerman have hired lobbying firms to protect their interests in the reapportionment process. New York must lose two congressional seats this year, and they will most likely come from the upstate area, because it hasn’t grown as fast as downstate.
