Legislature Overrides Governor's Vetoes

Less than 16 hours after the Governor presented the Legislature with 119 vetoes of their $92.8 billion budget, the Senate and Assembly responded with a predicted override of those vetoes.  The Assembly vote was divided along party lines, with a handful of Republican joining the majority Democrats, easily amassing the two-thirds of the chamber needed to override. The Senate vote was unanimous on every line.

This is the first time since 1982, during Gov. Hugh Carey’s tenure, that a budget veto has been overridden.
